There is an increasing consciousness about the amount of pollutants we are subjecting the environment to hinder weeds and pests on our property. If your garden has edible plants such as fruit, vegetables or herbs, this concern is even higher. There is no way to eliminate all pesticide deposits even with washing. Therefore, it is crucial to use eco-friendly methods when maintain your yard. The first stage in the process is to create an environment that is unfriendly to weeds. You may commence this method a year in advance. Start by laying down a bit of plastic over the garden area before you have started a garden. The soil under the plastic will reach temperatures that will destroy weed seeds. Consistently work the soil with a rake or garden tiller to break up any rocks or expose any seeds hiding deep under the soil. When choosing flora to plant in your garden, be well-educated about your area's weather conditions and rainfall. Ask nurseries or consult with books about the best way to maintain your chosen plants.
There are many simple methods to kill or pluck out weeds. You should regularly mow to prevent weeds such as dandelions from maturing into seeds. Pouring boiling water over plants for three to four days will also control certain types of weeds. Another method is to spray a mix of 20 parts water to vinegar on weeds. Dandelions, velvetleaf, thistle and smooth pigweed are highly susceptible to this environmentally friendly cocktail. In order to control weeds from growing in a large area such as your lawn, try spreading corn gluten meal, which you can find at your nursery. This step is most effective during the growing season. Using a garden flamer is another possible tool against pesky weeds. Torching weeds should be done carefully, however, as to not kill surrounding plants. One of the best ways to discourage weeds from growing is laying down sheet mulch. Sheet mulch can consist of newspaper, cardboard, banana peels and other organic materials. Simply cover the ground around the plants you want to grow. Be sure to leave space for air circulation and the mulch will act as a natural barrier against photosynthesis from occurring in the soil. Spread weed seed-free compost, consisting of such as seaweed, conditioned compost, leaves, wood chips or branches, on top of the weed barrier.
If you tell people they can suppress unwanted weeds and nourish their garden at the same time, most of them will presume you're selling something! But the secret is in corn gluten meal, which is cheap and can be bought from any garden center or home improvement facility. Activates by water (make sure you irrigate your yard after scattering it), it obstructs the emergence of new plants but won't damage those that already have good roots. It also releases nitrogen into the soil, acting as fertilizer for your established plants. Why isn't everybody using this? Because it's a non brand-name product and it doesn't get promoted, but it is fantastic for your garden. Looking after your yard the eco-friendly takes a little more patience than simply spraying on weed killer, but it'll keep all your plants in better shape and it'll let you enjoy your garden without polluting the wider environment. You'll also have the pleasure of knowing that the pleasing landscaping you've cultivated hasn't involved any poisonous short-cuts but is in fact all your own work.
